Finding Heart

heart garland studiocharm

Today I gathered Valentine colors of felt from my bag of scraps and a few select pieces of beautiful bamboo felt that my friend Melissa generously supplied me with. I cut out various hearts– 1″ tall up to 3″ tall freehand (folding each scrap in half and cutting a symmetrical half heart) and turned them loose in a pile. This project was assisted by my four year old C. and her playgroup buddies who helped to sort and organize the hearts by color, size, etc. When it came time to sew them together, C. stood by my side and supplied me with a random very sophisticated pattern of fuzzy hearts to be linked in a straight stitch in white thread on my sewing machine. I then sewed all of them in one continuous strip from top to bottom and we ended up with about 7′ of garland! We are currently trying it out as a window swag in our living room. We’ll see where it ends up for Valentine’s Day. This was a fun project with kids and was very simple and quick to make.

I also love this scripture- I read it again today and wanted to share it with you. My heart is full.

We’ve been painting up an extremely diverse “extended” family of little wooden peg dolls around here. Here’s the next set ready to come to fruition:

Professional Cutter For Hire

Friday, January 17th, 2014

My sweet four year old just made my day with her sincere compliment, “Mommy, you are one good cutter!” Little does she know how hard I’ve had to work at my cutting skills. I still remember my kindergarten report card including a strong suggestion that “Amy needs to work on her cutting.”

Throughout the past year one of the favorite shared activities I enjoy with my four year old is when she brings me scissors, a sheet of paper and a special request for an animal to be cut out. I freehand cut out the shapes and she draws a habitat and colors the animal, then glues it on the background. I have to say her coloring skills and creativity surpass my cutting skills any day! We have volumes of this collaborative art process to show for it- so fun!

Cobblers and Cobbwebbs

Wednesday, January 15th, 2014

Earlier this week during our morning carpool run I challenged my kids to find out what type of profession a”cobbler” is. Many guesses were made as to how this job related to our peach cobbler we enjoyed for Sunday’s dessert, perhaps it is someone who cleans up cobbwebbs, etc. I gave another clue that a cobbler is a profession that used to be very much needed but in our day and age it has become pretty rare. My kids were bursting with ideas and laughter but nobody knew the correct answer so I created a bit of a competition as to who could reply to me first with an accurate description of a cobbler.

Later that night, my sweet daughter A. (9 years) ran to me to share her new insight into what  a cobbler does for a living. With this challenge I doubt my kids will ever forget what a real cobbler does, even though they will not likely meet one any time in the near or distant future.20140117-133539.jpg

So I share this story as it relates to my dusty old website–a bit of a cobbler in her own right, long neglected but still useful and sentimental to me. I am finding a new purpose in reviving her old “sole” by attaching new tread, threading new laces and dusting out the corners.  A bit of polish will do her good, and will hopefully be just what I’m looking for as a means of expression and sharing the creative endeavors I continuously delve into. Studiocharm shall be my comfortable, familiar friend with a little more spring in her step for now. Thanks for visiting!
